Warning: This post contains spoilers for ‘Infinity War’ and for ‘Agents of Shield,’ please proceed with caution.
If you know me, you should know that I adore Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Just knowing that the show and the films existed in the same universe, I’d always hoped that Agent Coulson would make his return to the big screen after being resurrected by S.H.I.E.L.D. or even have a tiny easter egg in the background.
Seeing as how everyone in AoS was supposed to be plastered all over TV screens, with government agencies on the hunt for rogue agents. So…if Coulson’s face was all over America, don’t you think at least Tony Stark or Cap would see it? And how both Agent Maria Hill and Nick Fury were active on both the small screen and big screen? Oh well. I got my wish (kinda) when Clark Gregg (Coulson) was confirmed to return in Captain Marvel.
Either way, when the credit rolled and I saw Maria Hill and Fury in the car, reaching to contact someone, I was PRAYING that Fury was gonna utter “Call Coulson!” to tie into Captain Marvel, since he’s probably one of the only other agents to know about Captain Marvel. I though it would have been PERFECT as I tie in for the show and the MCU. Especially since it feels as though AoS is creating itself in an entirely separate universe.
Infinity War could’ve been the film to bridge TV shows and the films, even though easter eggs or name drops. I mean, how badass would it be to see Agent Coulson return. He was the force to assemble the Avengers for the first time, but now that they’re broken up, they could use a familiar face. Could that face be Coulson? Imagine in Avengers 4, if he just walks right up to assemble them one last time, since Fury is gone. Amazing.
With episode 20 of season 5 of AoS, tie-ins to Infinity War were made with a namedrop of Thanos and what he will bring. Since the worlds exist in the same universe, it’s to be assumed that a few agents will deteriorate by the end of the season. Possibly Agent Coulson as well. As it would make a good transition to exit the show for a brief hiatus while he films Captain Marvel.
Either way, all I’m hoping for is to see Coulson on the big screen again.
